成千上萬日本沖繩縣縣民周日（19日）在首府那霸市舉行大規模集會，抗議美軍基地工作人員性侵並殺害當地女子，要求駐沖繩的美國海軍陸戰隊撤離當地。
齊聚悼遭性侵殺害女子
據共同社報導，這場沖繩縣民大會在那霸市奧武山公園舉行，主辦單位稱，有大約6萬5000人參加。大會除追悼被害女子，還通過決議，要求撤走駐沖繩的美國陸戰隊、整理並縮小美軍基地，以及徹底修改《日美地位協定》，向日美兩國政府發出了「反對基地」的呼聲。
沖繩縣知事翁長雄志和該縣選出的國會議員、縣內的市町村長等多人出席了大會。翁長說：「儘管發誓不讓此類事件重演，但卻未能改變政治的結構，這是我作為知事最痛心的事情。」他表明將以堅定不移的決心，促成《日美地位協定》的修改。
大會開始，民眾集體默哀，悼念遇害的20歲女子。大會上宣讀了女子父親的寄語，他宣稱，「為了不再有下一個受害者，縣民只要團結一致，就有可能撤走全部基地。」
力促修改日美地位協定
大會上，與會縣民一同高舉寫有「憤怒已超過界限」、「撤走海軍陸戰隊」的標語牌表達抗議。大會通過決議，宣稱「由於美軍基地存在才會發生這種事」，「為保衛縣民的人權和生命，大幅整頓並縮小美軍基地，尤其是撤走海軍陸戰隊，乃當務之急。」
今年4月間，一名美國陸戰隊基地的民間雇員，被控性侵並殺害一名當地年輕女子。數十年來，沖繩的美軍基地多次發生類似狀況，已激怒當地民眾。
